The moon is full and infuses the night with its eerie light, and I can hear through my open window the distant sound of a woman screaming and violently shouting (is it rage? or terror?) in what is probably a nasty domestic dispute. It’s lathering up the hounds within hearing distance. Night music.

Pralambasura then resumed his actual form-an effulgent body that was covered with golden ornaments and that resembled a cloud flashing with lightning and carrying the moon. When Lord Balarama saw the gigantic body of the demon as he moved swiftly in the sky-with his blazing eyes, fiery hair, terrible teeth reaching toward his scowling brows, and amazing effulgence generated by his armlets, crown and earrings-the Lord seemed to become a little frightened. Remembering the actual situation, the fearless Balarama understood that the demon was trying to kidnap Him and take Him away from His companions. The Lord then became furious and struck the demon’s head with His hard fist, just as Indra, the king of the demigods, strikes a mountain with his thunderbolt weapon. Thus smashed by Balarama’s fist, Pralamba’s head immediately cracked open. The demon vomited blood from his mouth and lost all consciousness, and then with a great noise he fell lifeless to the ground, like a mountain devastated by Indra.

This canvas, first exhibited in 1799, was sold by the artist in 1808 to his biographer, John Knowles. It illustrates a passage from Paradise Lost (II:622–66) in which the hellhounds surrounding Sin are compared to those who “follow the night-hag when, called, / In secret, riding through the air she comes, Lured with the smell of infant blood, to dance / With Lapland witches, while the laboring moon Eclipses at their charms.” “Night-hag” is an epithet of the Greek goddess Hecate, who presided over witchcraft and magical rites.

In 398, by the will of Senator Pammachius, a titulus church was built on top of their home, and is recorded as the titulus Pamachii in the acts of the 499 synod of Pope Symmachus. It stands on the Caelian Hill.
